Arts Night is a cherished mini tradition where we bring together all the incredible, diverse talents in the mini and show them off at a fun and wholesome show. Tula and I were tasked with planning and hosting this year’s show which was definitely a lot of work, but lots of fun none the less. We got to put our leadership skills to use by planning all of the rehearsals and coordinating a whole bunch of people including the StageCraft students, Gr. 11 shadows, and of course, the performers. There were definitely bumps along the road, but we made it work and came together to make an unforgettable Arts Night. Filled with music, dance, skits, and even magic, the night was a reminder that mini students are so much more than just “academic”. Along with the very enthusiastic audience filled with members of the mini community, my time hosting Arts Night with Tula will always be a very fond memory. When James and I were looking for where to start when planning Arts Night this year, our first thought was the video and how awkward it was going to be. Every year, Arts Night starts off with a video created by the hosts. These videos normally have something to do with being late for Arts Night, not knowing what to plan, etc. But March was around the corner, and James and I still had no clue what we were going to do. The thought of our faces being plastered on the big projector in the auditorium for 500 people to see made us want to throw up, and we decided to put it off for the time being.
But suddenly, one day, a thought occurred to us. Our class is known for our driving skills, from Aidan backing into Alan’s car outside the mini, to Sarah hitting the curb so hard her tire popped, and me backing into a tree after a basketball game. As concerning as this is - and hopefully one day we improve - this was perfect to use for our video (in moderation). So, we had an idea!
But as we started to plan, we needed more - something that brought the whole video together and that the audience would love. And then it hit us: get all the mini teachers to be in our video. The teachers said yes (thank god) and we ended up having a great time dressing up and getting into Mr. Lee’s mini van to film “the drive to Arts Night”. After many days of filming, we finally brought the video together with both interviews from our class members and that iconic scene with all the teachers. Through all the laughing and having to redo takes, we didn’t look at this video as much of a burden anymore, but as something fun that we will always remember. We hope you enjoy it!
